Vishwanatha Kshetra of Katapady is the well known Hindu temple of Karnataka. The popular Kshetra came in to existence in the form of Bhajana Mandir in the year 1934 having an objective of spreading divine message of Sri Narayana Guruswamy, the great social and religious reformer. This institution grew rapidly for fulfilling religious, educational and social needs of Billawa community and backward class people.
Sri Gurupada Swamy, disciple of Sri Narayana Guru was proceeding towards Udupi in 1941 during his visit to south canara district. Gurupada Swamy stopped in between Katapady near the samithi premises and started meditating. On meditation he pointed out a place, and said this place will be a religious hub in future. Based on Gurupada Swamy advice a devotee thought of having a temple for Billava community and informed the samithi. The seva samithi then purchased land and laid the foundation stone in the year 1943. The temple slowly but surely took shape due to the steadfast patronage of individuals and institutions. The temple construction was completed in the year 1964. Shivagiri Matadipathi undertook the Prathista ceremony of Sri Vishwanatha Kshetra, since then it has been social and religious centre of Billawas.
